About | The Homecoming

A prominent Liverpool architect has designed a stunning new 23 storey Liver Bird, that will sit on a five storey nest, 100 metres in diameter. David Backhouse designed the award winning Cavern Walks and The Cavern Club in Liverpool, and The Gardens in Manchester.

Homecoming – The Statue of Liverpool is in the shape of the beautiful Liver Bird, and will be 100 metres tall and anchored in the Mersey, It will be fully self – sustainable with no energy costs. Power will be provided through wind turbines in the wings and tidal turbines under the nest. The golden/green bird will be clad in diamond shaped photovoltaic cells.

The spacious building has an atrium on every floor which will provide a huge variety of activities. These range from a luxury hotel, apartment accommodation and specialised shopping. A split level restaurant, with panoramic views through the Liver Bird’s eyes; similar to the Statue of Liberty where visitors can view New York, or in Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower. Leisure activities and a Genealogy museum linked to New York’s Ellis Island could be included.

This is a building for all comers, with space for specialised zones where IT start ups, entrepreneurs, or the charitable sector could come together to foster innovation and development.

Architect, David Backhouse and his team believe the project will become another great Liverpool landmark and a huge tourist attraction, set  just downstream from the world famous ‘Three Graces’.

They have consulted tidal experts and engineers, and have been advised by local experienced river pilot John Curry on the positioning of the island.

Design team members, Peter Foo and Gary Morris, say they wanted to help create something for the city that will be a source of pride for residents, who will identify with it. It will symbolise the tradition of the city but more importantly the essence of the new city of Liverpool in the 21st Century, exciting and self sustaining. .

David Backhouse and the design team are actively seeking investors to help bring this potentially outstanding Liverpool landmark to fruition.
